Abstract

The present research attempt to investigate learner’sattitudes toward the target culture dealt with in the Englishlanguage classroom and, find out the main reasons behind suchattitudes. It also aims at exploring the reliability of the usedtextbooks in regard to their cultural content and finding out whetheror not they promote cultural prejudices against the target culture.Accordingly, a questionnaire was distributed to a sample of studentsand the Middle School English textbooks were quantitatively andqualitatively analyzed and evaluated in terms of their culturalfocus, using criteria of analysis created by Risager (1991),Skopinskaja (2003). The obtained qualitative and quantitativeresults indicated that learners showed admiration for the foreignculture. Furthermore, we noticed that no textbook encouragesor invites learners to come together to discuss and examine theiropinions regarding the several cultural topics encompassed in thecourse books. In the light of the obtained results, some practicalrecommendations are made to remedy the weaknesses observed tooffer better teaching context for our young generation.
