Abstract

Objectification is a significant sign in postmodernliterature. Martin Amis objectifies the identities of his charactersthrough technical problematization of the social norms, namely, the established norms of sex and woman. However, this idea ofobjectification was not fully taken into account in Amis’ novelThe Pregnant Widow, and there has been little debate about it interms of identity formation. Thus, the purpose of the present study isto investigate how this technique of problematization manifests itselfas a vital tool of objectification in Amis’ novel. Relying on MichelFoucault’s conception of problematization, this study examinesthe idea of problematization of sex and woman which becomes animportant idea that the protagonist Scheherazade FF manipulatesto realize herself and to achieve her own identity. The paper revealsa conclusion in which the problematization of sex and woman canbe instrumental in objectifying self and re-affirming subjectivityas in Scheherazade.
