Abstract
Kurdistan as autonomous region of Iraq faced unsettled situations, particularly the onslaught of ISIS since 2014, economic crises hit KRI hard. In essence, the KRI economic sector is based on oil revenues which KRI started to export oil independently since 2014 through Turkey's Ceyhan port. In 2023 the International Court of Arbitration in Paris forced Turkey to stop exporting oil from the KRI and Kirkuk, since then, oil exports have been suspended. This decision worsened economic situations, and the wage crises faced KRI. Which have an effect on all government sectors especially education. Through this qualitative inquiry the consequence of economic recession on education in KRI were addressed. In depth interview became the basis of this research. Thus, a set of semis structured open-ended question was directed to 8 teachers, 4 male and 4 female teachers with (five to thirty years’) of teaching experience belonging to Sulaymaniyah governorate. This study employed thematic analysis to understand teachers’ perceptions profoundly. The results indicate that recession have a huge effect on education sector especially on students’ performance, school infrastructure and the teacher’s productivity and motivation as well. Because KRI government cannot afford teachers monthly salary at time and teachers took street for five months asked for their unpaid salary. Therefore, the outcome of this study will help the Kurdistan’s Ministry of Education, policy makers, stakeholders to recognize how economic recession affected education sector in KRI. For that reason, necessary action needs to be placed in this regard.
